Here are the most common plumbing issues and the solutions that will make you look like a seasoned professional in no time.
1. Clogged Drains
Recognizing the Problem: Clogged drains can occur in your shower, sink or toilet and can be easily recognized by a back up of water.
Finding a Solution: Surprisingly, a plunger might be your new best friend. Turns out this tool is not just for toilets! Grab your plunger and use it on whichever drain is acting up.
2. Leaky Faucets
Recognizing the Problem: Drip…drop…drip…drop…a faucet leaking one drop of water per second ends up wasting over 3,000 gallons each year! Now if you have a leaky faucet, you probably know it already. And you need to fix it ASAP.
Finding a Solution: Leaky faucets occur due to faulty washers. Figure out which washer is the culprit and head to the hardware store for a replacement.
3. Cracked Porcelain
Recognizing the Problem: Whether you have a small or large crack – it can be alarming to notice your toilet or bathtub is falling apart. If the crack goes all the way through, you’ll need a quick fix to prevent damage from water-filled tubs.
Finding a Solution: For this problem, you’ll need two ingredients. Plumbers putty and caulk. Start with the plumber’s putty and shove it in as far as possible. This should stop the leak. Finish it with a layer of caulk over the top to hold it all together. Unfortunately, this is not a forever solution – you will eventually have to replace the entire appliance.
Water Heater Woes
Recognizing the Problem: An icy shower. That’s all we have to say.
Finding a Solution: First, check the pilot light. If it is off, re-light it. If this is not the issue and your water heater is older than most, the problem could be related to sediment or mineral build-up. Flush the whole system and hop back in the shower.
